Fortress by pyrrhula

Fortress

In the district of the city Utrecht are four of these fortresses. The are part of the so called 'Dutch waterboundary'. In the 17th and 18th century a line of fortresses was build around the major cities. The idea was to flood the rest of the Netherlands when in war, so the enemy could not advance to the most important cities, and defend those cities with these waterfortresses. In the 19th century, when this fortress was build, when we were under Napoleonic rule, the line was strengthened with new fortresses. This whole idea, flooding almost all the country except the big cities in the west, was rather ludicrous and never used.

Thanks to Iiwi for the explanation and lines .
What a great shot and love the detailed explanation of the use. Very interesting.

Good PoV. And interesting historical story. Just wander how long those cities would be able to defense themselves.

Neat looking building. What an unusual idea about the flooding. Good thing they never used it. Thanks for sharing this part of history

Nicely photographed and very interesting details. Wonder what was to happen to all the people outside the major cities when the plains were to be flooded. The mind boggles at the idea.

A good idea in theory but, as you say, in practice?! All the green in your shot gives it a very English feel!

Wow a very interesting narrative. I think I like the idea so long as the people outside the cities are forewarned of the incoming enemy so that they can take refuge in the cities. Thanks for sharing.

@vickisfotos @quietpurplehaze @sangwann In history we did often use the water for defence the cities. This was never used as in the last war there where aircrafts/planes to bomb the cities.

Thank goodness they were never used. interesting history though.
