Mennen is generally riding with horse and wagon (a contraction)
For this pic. I think I own you an good explanation .
A mennegat is a gate into the summer-dike so the farmer good drive his horse and wagon trough it. This was become nessasary as there was after years of alluvial land (silted up) outsid the dike, there was a reclaim on it by building a new (sea) dike. In those day`s they where not as reliable as needed so the old dike was a spare/savety one .
The new dike becomes the sea -dike , the old one a summer-dike The gate was closed in autum and winter by wooden shelfs walls (2) where in between they did dung and loam to make it water tide.
This gates are typical for the northeren part of our country. I do n`t see them here.
Wish all of you a great weekend and week to come. Stay save, healthy and happy.
beautiful view, like the first photo as the road seems to go on forever.....
We also have reclaimed land here in Cape Town (our Dutch forefathers did it), though we do not use them like you do, so it is interesting to know about your gates and how they use them. Thanks for sharing
Great pictures showing the country you live in, and good information too. The Rhine river which is that far from here has a summer and a winter dyke as well . You might remember some of the shots I posted a few weeks back taken from the dyke
