Dijkhuizen ( Houses, close to a dike)

I`ve try to find the story and reason of this, dijkhuizen. Houses build close to a dike. Although they are historical , and very common, I couldn`t find any of it on internet. (Only villages, people and firms with this name.) In the city I live they are new rebuild onces on the border, and dike of the old inner city . This pic. shows it the best. ( the green wall is a dike)
Like the way the sun is highlighting the houses - do the dikes ever flood?

@gilbertwood. I guest for wind shelter. In the middle of the polderland they planted trees around the farms for the same reason.

You must be a brave person to build on a dike I think! Although these houses are very nice and the green is lovely!

A very pretty scene, Pyrhulla. Fav. That is why the Maltese people are always happy - because it is sunshine for most of the year, haha.
