I know that a little calamondin orange hanging from a little tree in our kitchen may seem an unlikely subject for practising setting the shutter speed but I'm running out of time before I need to have my 'homework' ready for the next photography workshop. And I missed a golden opportunity this morning on our walk: two dogs chasing around the park. I was just getting my camera out when their owner called them, made them sit and put them both on the lead.
I think part of this homework exercise is to see what f value the camera uses when you set the ss and in this case it has set what I would have set to take the shot using aperture priority. (My little Lumix doesn't do 2.8)
We were trying to work out how old this tree is, certainly a few years. Once it produced enough small oranges to make a pot of marmalade! I got fed up with it when it stopped flowering and stuck it in the garden, then brought it into the utility room where, after a while, I noticed small blossoms so now it's back in the kitchen and the blossom has turned into 7 small oranges!
I didn't notice your window sill, Pat - I don't do much housework but cleaning sinks + the tiles on the windowsill is part of my small repertoire. I think dust looks much worse on camera than it really is anyway! Does your new camera have an optical viewfinder?
Go you!! So glad you are using the manual settings. I think the fruit comes out nice and crisp. And I'm seriously jealous that you have a plant bearing fruit at the windowsill!
Reading the above comments Hazel, I think it is clear that we all think you're a good photographer trying hard to get better, and that you're a brilliant gardener who should be giving lessons to some of the rest of us!!
This is lovely -- the focus is perfect and the color is warm. I'm still having trouble with F stops and shutter speed. To me they have a complex and difficult relationship.
@quietpurplehaze I know exactly what you mean! I'm OK thanks just having a break before heading back over to Kent to my Dad. Was there last night until about midnight and one of my sisters slept over (not much sleeping involved unfortunately) My poor Dad is very scared and confused and it is difficult to see but we have each other for support. I will stay there tonight and we shall have to see how things progress. Thanks for asking Hazel, I appreciate it.
Thanks, Graham - that's quite a relief!!!!

You're really too kind, Fiona - I'll take the photographic accolade but I'm no gardener (Ray does all that) but I do like my indoor plants!
Thank you and I agree with what you say about f and ss but I am learning and have 3 more sessions of the workshop left.
Thanks, Paula - I feel that I'm alternating learning and being confused right now! I hope you are OK.
Sending all kind thoughts Paula. A difficult time for your dad and for all the family too, also very draining - bon courage!
