Beautiful tribute. I was shocked to hear that more than 888,000 British men died during WWI. I knew it was terrible, but did not know it was almost 2 percent of the population.

Yes, the hole was an oval of patterned stone which we cannot see because of the poppy reflection.
Yes, Claire, it was just a chance that it had rained and quite apt as the message on the memorial says that these men's grave is usually the sea.
