I learnt yesterday that a blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month. This is the blue moon of July 31st, the first full moon was July 2nd.
The last blue moon was in August 2012, the next will not be until January 2018.
Moon shots usually defeat me so I googled 'how to photograph the moon', and used the suggested settings: f11, ss1/250, iso100 - also spot metering and wide focus. No tripod, concentrated hard on keeping still!
And Picasa 3 supplied the blue 'colouring-in' etc.
Yesterday's blue moon was also a perigee moon = the moon at its closest approach to the earth.
I'm overwhelmed by the response to yesterday's 'high yellow note', so many favs and on PP, but mostly your interesting comments, thank you.
I was surprised to learn this on the news last night too - but I didn't make the effort to go out with my camera - though it did cross my mind! I really like this blue effect. Fav.
