The natural amphitheatre at Cheesefoot Head (pronounced Chess-foot) became a vast encampment of allied troops before D-Day in 1944.
Thousands of American and British troops filled the steeply sloping banks to see Joe Louis, the heavyweight champion of the world - serving in the US army as a physical education teacher - at a US Army boxing tournament.
General Eisenhower used the large amphitheatre to address American troops just prior to the D-Day landings.
On our visit, I had to be content with this shot looking over the landscape as the 'amphitheatre' was being prepared for a Boomtown Festival and a shot containing paraphernalia such as red and white striped awnings was not what I had in mind. (I think I might need to be in a helicopter to get a really good impression!!)
Pat, I'm so ignorant about certain things that I'd never even heard of Joe Louis until I checked the facts about Eisenhower and found that snippet too!
Wonderful information and I learned something new again today!! I love learning new things. That barbed wire makes me cringe when I see it. I know it does it's job, but my son was riding his bike down a hill, lost control and fell into some barbed wire!! He has a permanent Z on his chest and had to have 9 stitches in his thumb and 18 stitches in his arm!! Besides bad memories this is a great shot and I did learn something new!! LOL FAV!

Kathy, sorry to hear about your son. Barbed wire is such evil stuff - but it makes quite good shots.
Give us a shout for tea and cake if you do. It's not our home county but we love it,so much to see and do and so many places to visit.
