seed pods from stinking iris by quietpurplehaze

seed pods from stinking iris

I saw these in a garden in Eastleigh yesterday and luckily had taken my little Panasonic Lumix with me.

The bright berries are from the purple/blue iris and I found online that they do not get eaten by the birds. I'm not sure of the reason - either they smell or taste too bad I guess.
A lovely shot - they are such a nice colour - perhaps they taste terrible…..

That is very odd for a plant not to want birds to spread its seeds around. I'm sure there is a very good reason for that too.

This is a really great capture

I understand the plant itself is poisonous, so presumably the seeds are too!

What an unfortunate name for such a lovely plant. I had to Google it and discovered that according to Wikipedia it is known as "stinking" because some people find the smell of its leaves unpleasant when crushed or bruised, an odour that has been described as "beefy". You learn something every day.
