I was lucky to get a shot of this unusual orchid at my dental appointment this week.
Yesterday I gathered together 6 dormant orchids in pots ready to re-pot them. A surprise when I found a new flower stem with buds on the one in our dormer bedroom. It's been in a shady spot far from the window as we have too narrow sills for pot plants.
I kept it only for the leaves and it just proves to me that orchids are individualists!
Orchids fascinate me but I've never tried growing them myself. They seem so different to other plants, in their needs, that it seemed it would be a whole new adventure and, I think, I already have too many interests leading in different directions but, I sure am happy to admire the efforts of those more intrepid than I.
This is a gorgeous orchid! When our Mom passed last February we each took a few of her beautiful orchids home. The one I have was heavy with blooms and I tried to lift them and the whole stem broke off! It's just been leaves since then. I feel so badly because it bloomed 2x a year for Mom!
It probably needs time to recover. I would keep it on a shelf which is at right angles near to a window (that's the best place in our house), water it with rain water about every 10 days or 2 weeks, dust and mist the leaves - and be very patient. Do show us if it flowers!
