'13' - no longer a church - I want to tell you a 'story'

On13th August, 1868, the Church of the Resurrection was consecrated for the new parish of Eastleigh. Despite initially growing alongside the development of Eastleigh as a railway town, by 1978 it was closed due to a dwindling congregation and high maintenance costs.

In July 1985 the church was gutted by fire and for the next nearly 20 years was roofless and derelict until a local housing association decided to convert it into studio apartments. A steel frame was erected in the interior and a new roof added. It is a grade 2 listed building which won awards for the conversion, completed in 2004. It is also quite hard to photograph as it sits on the corner of a busy roundabout. I took my pics from the car.
That is a lovely story of a new use for a lovely building. I hope that it is more successful than a similar project opposite to us. The building is not listed and I suspect less care was taken over its conversion.

@w3n6y
I think this is OK and it's 7 years old as apartments now. I did read online that the church had a pre-Raphaelite window by Henry Holiday but I don't know what has happened to that now.

@gerry
Thanks Gerry and especially for the fav. It's very difficult to get a good shot of this building in its situation so I thought 3 pics in a collage was the best way of showing it. I'm glad the building has a new use, as for years it was a terrible eyesore, roofless and with vegetation growing out of the walls etc,

Hazel, thank you - my main problem here was that I didn't know the name of the original church. Our friends found it out for me, Neville using his Pevsner's Guide and Jackie following it up online. Then it was easy to find out all this info. In the case of my dad, I remember him saying that Friday 13th was his lucky day so I skimmed his diaries to see if there was anything in there and just came up with the date of the photo. It made me think of your comment yesterday about photos: "This is the reason why I enjoy photography. To capture the moment and so good to look back on." (Sometimes a moment in history!)

How wonderful to think that this lovely church has been brought back to life and put to good use. You have taken some nice pics of it which show what a nice building it is

@rosiekind

I believe the accommodation is targeted more to young people so I feel that's doubly nice, I agree its architecture is great.

A nice kind of finding new purposes for old buildings . we do this very often and always for historical buildings. A great collage to show it from different views
