home for earwigs

This type of pompom dahlia always seemed to have the most earwigs in it when my dad brought some in from the garden to put in a vase. My little sister and I used to squeal and jump about because of the speed they could run.

And my dad used to tell a terrible, 'corny' joke:

"What did the earwig say as he fell off the wall?"

'erewego

My dear Auntie Betty tells me he also knew some risqué jokes but (un)fortunately I don't know any of them so I can't bore you with them.
Dahlia = earwigs to me. However they are so pretty and this is a great capture.

Wow, what a stunning shot, fave!. I had to move a couple of hundered pavers from my Sisters place to my place today. I had to deal with thousands of earwigs. They were everywhere.

@karlow75

Oh, I cannot imagine it! Since I've grown up and not lived with my dad growing dahlias, I've hardly ever seen one!!!!

@quietpurplehaze I should have taken a shot of them, they were all bunched underneath the pavers, just falling over each other. It would have freaked my girls out. :)

Beautiful shot. I used to hate earwigs when we lived in the UK. Luckily we don't get them here. Mind you we get plenty of other nasties though.

Beautiful image!! This has made me smile as whenever I say to my sister oh I love dahlias and want to grow some she always says no - whenever dad used to bring them indoors they were full of earwigs!! How funny!! Fav!

Ooh !! Hazel I do love dahlias -- and the pom-poms are so sweet we always had some in the garden and Rod (my late husband ) would make up all kind of devices to trap them some quite effective -- but not always did they enhance the look of the dahlia patch ! I can not stand the earwigs hence do not grow Dahlias now -- isn't it a shame !!

@onewing @beryl

I had no idea that so many of us had earwigs in common!!! Beryl, Rod's devices to trap them sound interesting. My dad never got round to that!

@quietpurplehaze I remember one was to put canes among the plants and place scrunched up newspaper in plastics cups and put them amongst the plants on the canes in the evening so the earwigs would go into hiding in them overnight These were collected in the morning and disposed of them !! The same ritual would take place each evening !!-- bit of a fad wasn't it !!

A beautiful pom pom Dahlia and capture. I hate earwigs so never bring them into the house the single ones seem to be free of them though.

@beryl

Now is that cruel to earwigs, I'm wondering?! What's the point of earwigs, I also wonder?!

I need to plant some of these in my dahlia bed! Beautiful! Earwigs are weird creatures, for certain.
