I saw this as Nancy and I walked into Winchester the other day. It's evident that a door under the sign has been bricked up but I can find no more about the history of this St Cross stores.
Was it just a general store in the area or did it have some connection with the nearby Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty? A mystery so far.
I did find in my research that a terraced house here sells for £500,000 to £550,000.
Yes, agree and I thought at first it was a bricked-up widow as some time in history folk did this to avoid a tax levied on windows (on daylight in fact, can you believe!)
