I've often wondered about 'trémière' in their name and this morning I looked it up online and found it's a corruption of 'rose d'outremer' (overseas) so I guess they originated in French overseas territories.
I have a passion for French. I run a French Lit group and read quite a lot in French - don't get much speaking practice but we have a week in France in September. Shame we don't live close!
The French is better than hollyhock too I think. So the Dutch is stick rose or rose on a stick?!
Stick rose it is. Btw. French was my favourite language at high school but I forgot a lot I'm afraid.
