The Pileated is the largest woodpecker measuring 18 inches in length. These woodpeckers are secretive and retiring birds, seeing them is always an unexpected surprise. We frequently hear their rhythmic drumming echo through the forest.
This one made a visit to our backyard today!!
Thank you for your comments and favs for Rocky's Back from yesterday, they're greatly appreciated.
Any other time of year I'd take you up on that offer of snow. I love the stuff, honestly. If you've got some in say, early November, I'll take it then!

Hope you have a change to check it out.
Good catch; I have found these birds to be very sppoky and tuned in to fact that someone is trying to take their picture. They are my good luck birds! (saw one the day I found out I was expecting son who turned out to be a red head).
Hope you have a change to check it out.
