Backing up photos

I spent yesterday trying to install El Capitan on my macs. How's that going, you say? Great on the laptop. Not so great on the desktop. It took until this morning and is S-L-O-W. Before I did that I decided to make sure my photos were backed up on my external hard drive. I was just a little behind on that!

this is an excellent idea
I had a crash and lost a lot of photos including my wedding pics. The good news is that I'd emailed them to a bunch of people so I was able to get those back. Sadly I work in IT and know better.
