This is what's left of the entrance to one of the kilns at Rhododendron, the estate of the tile maker (Rafael Gustavvino, Sr) for the Biltmore Estate. Rhododendron is located in Black Mountain NC. Not much left of this estate. In case you're interested here's a link: http://www.history.swannanoavalleymuseum.org/guastavino/
Interesting door...and much more so for having followed your link. What an interesting man and what looks like a beautiful area to have had his Spanish Castle. Thank you.
@olivetreeann It was a large area and I believe there actually were two kilns. It looked like they were dug back into the earth. Several layers of these stone walls. Thank you @kwind Thank you very much. @leananiemand Thank you Leana. @s4sayer Thank you Margo. Glad you enjoyed the additional information. There is a church in Asheville that was tiled by this same man. One day I'd like to see it. @jamibann Thank you very much Issi @stevepo Thank you Steve. It's too bad that more wasn't preserved. @fbailey Thank you Felicity.
@tosee Thank you. You're right, now that I think about it. Of course, what would I know. I tried to read those books unsuccessfully 3 times and even tried watching the movie. I'm glad I didn't pay to go see it, didn't make it through that either.
@cocobella Thank you Corinne and you're very welcome. @summerfield Thanks Vicki. No, the house is gone. It seems it would have stood on the hill about the kilns. @pyrrhula Thank you very much Ferry.
