Fiery skipper by rhoing

Fiery skipper

Zoomed to 250mm. This guy posed on a chrysanthemum flower for several seconds and this was the last frame he let me have before flitting away. I really liked the “folds” or veins in the wings.

Confirmed at BAMONA as “Hylephila phyleus” (family, Hesperiidae; subfamily, Hesperiinae) or “Fiery skipper”; http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/724335

The “story” today was plumbing, but there are no photos to chronicle the day’s events. The end result is that we are replacing all faucets and all old shutoff valves. Kuh-ching, kuh-ching…

Look at his big eyes. I take it he saw the estimate :O

Your macro is tops! I can see the expression in this butterfly's face!
June 14th, 2012
@digitalrn What a great comment, Rick. We were bug-eyed, too!
June 14th, 2012
@sparkleplenty1 Thanks, Joyce! It's been a good week!

@espyetta Sexy, indeed! Indeed, the "eyes" have it!

@harley84 @ellen @marieooi @allisonrap @ruthmouch @aspada @paulavdmerwe @annbo @lyoungs1023 @rhos Thank you, all, so much. I guess since I posted so many flower shots last year, I'm looking more closely at the life that's teeming around the flowers and plants!

@psychographer Thank you, Lisa! With zoom or macro, many of these require patience, a very steady hand or both!

@michelleyoung Another fave from Michelle: thank you so much!

@suek Thanks for the fav, Sue! I really appreciate them all!

@maggiemae If we can get in "tight" on some of the "faces" in the bug world, they really can be quite expressive. It's astonishing sometimes! (Creepy, sometimes, too!)
June 14th, 2012
I just love skippers! The have the cutest little faces :) Nice capture!
June 14th, 2012
@jillmstruss @espyetta Thanks, Jill! I have to give credit: I became aware of skippers through MaryBeth's recent post, http://365project.org/espyetta/album-3/2012-06-07
June 14th, 2012
I love the eye and antenna. Nice catch!
June 14th, 2012
Best skipper shot I have seen on 365. Your macros are awesome.
June 14th, 2012
A beautiful skipper! You've captured great details! 8)
June 14th, 2012
Gorgeous! Another great macro!!!
June 14th, 2012
Fantastic capture and congrats on the PP with it.
June 14th, 2012
I love skippers - which will be photo for tomorrow. I know all about kuh-ching - our last house was a century old fixer-upper. Major kuh-ching until we sold it last month after all the renos. ;-)

@cmc1200 @jaboney @myautofocuslife @angeliquenordal I like the resolution from my Rebel T2i, the lens that zooms out to 250mm and a photo-editing application to crop down. :)

@sailingmusic Thanks so much, Myrna. I was pleased it made the PP!

@russianblue I'll have to check your skipper. I shot another one yesterday but I haven't been able to figure out what kind. The plumber is here as I type. Replacing all faucets. I guess we have "a house of a certain age"!
June 15th, 2012
WOW!
June 22nd, 2012
@chrismarfil Thanks, Chris! Yeah, I couldn't have asked for a better background or flower! Such a relatively small butterfly, too!
June 22nd, 2012
I thought I had fav ed it....now I have. I love how his antennae look super short due to the angle!
July 9th, 2012
@espyetta I have just submitted this one to BAMONA for a sighting. Yeah, the short antennae make me think of Martin-the-Martian... ;) Thanks for the fav, MaryBeth!

@rhoing When I get mad, I tend to just speak really quietly and calmly (sometimes!) and people used to say it reminded them of Marvin the Martian!

@espyetta May Ray Walston rest in peace, but what a great, long career he had!
