Okay, it’s not really an image from a scanning electron microscope and it’s not a cold virus. It’s just a “sticker ball” from a sweet gum tree (Liquidambar styraciflua).
I had the idea to do this kind of shot several weeks ago when I found a shiny, freshly-fallen seed pod on the ground. The shinier, greener version made for a more convincing “microscopic virus” — see http://365project.org/allie912/whatintheworld/2011-06-21 — but the context is more appropriate today as Clare & I are in Week #2 or 3 of having a stubborn cold. Last week we went to the gym precisely 3 times. Combined. And it’s been nearly 3 weeks since I went to the lake. Tomorrow when we wake up we’ll be 100%, right Clare? Uh huh…

Oh, man! I was so excited that this was actually a microscope shot. This is very cool, anyway, and very creative. I love the light and composition. Well done, Thom! Hope you are 100% tomorrow!
