Skipper! by rhoing

Skipper!

I think this is probably a Fiery Skipper (Hylephila phyleus; family, Hesperiidae; subfamily, Hesperiinae); see http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Hylephila-phyleus

Confirmed at BAMONA as Hylephila phyleus or “Fiery Skipper”; http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/908559

One year ago I registered (free) at Butterflies And Moths Of North America (BAMONA)!
The volunteer expert for my region has been super-helpful in identifying my butterflies and moths. If you’re in North America, check ’em out: http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/

Photo taken in the outside garden next to the SIUC Plant Biology Greenhouse, http://www.plantbiology.siu.edu/facilities/plant-biology-facilities/greenhouse/index.php

Spent the first half of the morning at the Orthopaedic Institute to have Clare’s wrist x-rayed again and evaluated after a mishap a week ago with the “Girls Make Movies” campers at the area roller rink. Turns out to be a fractured scaphoid bone (on her right hand, which is her “dominant” hand). Since hers is fractured at the “waist” of the bone, she is in a thumb-to-bicep cast for 5 weeks to completely immobilize the thumb. This will likely be followed by a thumb-to-forearm cast for another 4–6 weeks. After that, there is a small chance she will still require surgery. In the meantime, she will have to learn lots of tricks to accomplish otherwise-everyday and -simple tasks.

I also submitted a moth sighting today to BAMONA. It was ID’ed as “Catocala innubens,” which is neither here nor there, but the common name is a bit unusual: “The Betrothed.” The species page at BAMONA: http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Catocala-innubens
