Zebra Swallowtail by rhoing

Zebra Swallowtail

Even the National Wildlife Federation Field Guide to Insects and Spiders of North America calls the Zebras “stunning swallowtails”: “The hindwings have 1 long tail, blue spots, and a scarlet spot; a scarlet band crosses the hindwings below. The antennae are rust-colored” (p. 265).

This is not the first Zebra Swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus; family, Papilionidae; subfamily, Papilioninae) I have photographed this summer, but this is a better shot than I was able to get a week ago when I posted a “photo-bombing ant,” http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2013-06-27

Confirmed at BAMONA as Eurytides marcellus or “Zebra Swallowtail”; http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/909070
