Liberia Martyrs

Our weekend retreat is being held at the Ruma, Illinois home of The Adorers of the Blood of Christ — http://adorers.org/ — a religious order founded by a young Italian woman, Maria De Mattias (now Saint Maria De Mattias): http://www.vatican.va/news_services/liturgy/saints/ns_lit_doc_20030518_de-mattias_en.html

In October 1992, five of this order's missionary sisters in Liberia were killed by soldiers in the army of a Liberian warlord during a civil war that left hundreds of thousands dead. This sculpture memorializes the five sisters in front of the center in Ruma, Illinois:
» Sister Barbara Ann Muttra
» Sister Mary Joel Kolmer
» Sister Kathleen McGuire
» Sister Agnes Mueller
» Sister Shirley Kolmer

I shot this in portrait orientation because of the pedestal on which the sculpture rests, but I cropped it to landscape for more detail and, I think, better effect.
