Rowing shell repair begins… by rhoing

Rowing shell repair begins…

Several weeks ago I realized the hull of our recently-purchased used-rowing shell was "bubbling" out from this gunwale stringer. Upon closer inspection, I realized there was a "line" across the stringer. Sure enough, the stringer is cracked.

I found the boat-designer and -builder online — Olympic rowing silver medalist Calvin Coffey — and he emailed me step-by-step instructions to repair the break. Since then I have been assembling materials and today I've peeled back the decking for a first-hand look at the break.

Of course this happened at a structurally-weak point, a point where the stringer is dadoed rather than solid. This means I'll have to epoxy twice rather than once. This will be a bit of a repair adventure as I've never done anything like this before, but there should be some fun and "discovery" to it! With a big "thank you!" to my brother-in-law for sending glass mat and the marine-quality epoxy components for doing this project properly!
