Cirsium vulgare (Bull thistle)

Today I left the house with just my point-and-shoot. There was an interesting-looking moth on a front screen that I photo'ed, and it was a new one for me, “Black-barred Brown” (whose scientific name you have to love, “Plagiomimicus pityochromus”) » http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/sighting_details/1064642
but the photo isn't very good.
Instead, I offer this weed, in the untended-for-years garden across the street.
