Wood grain by rhoing

Wood grain

I built myself a work bench for the garage over the past several weeks-and-months. With the leftover plywood and 2×4s, I decided to build Clare a garage work table, too. Hers is on casters and has an extra shelf underneath for storage. Both tables, however, have a splinter-preventing molding edge around the plywood top. The moldings were miter-cut for the corners and these are two “artifacts” from the miter-cuts. The molding is only ¾" wide, so this is a pretty decent close-up shot with my Nikon P&S inside my “foldio” (on a thin cross-section from a 2×4). I thought it was interesting how different the wood grain looks on these two pieces!

Only one portrait; sigh. :-\

First time in 4 years I've encountered this issue including links to my past posts!

I agree that it is really interesting, and your photo is wonderful for such small subjects. Is the background more of the molding edge material?

@cejaanderson No; the background is a [almost-translucent] 1/16" thick slicing of a 2×4 to make sure I have a smooth, square cut from the end of a stud. Not that a lot of lumber is not-as-good as it used to be. I'd bet you've heard Charlie complain about lumber quality over the years!

@rhoing Yes, I've accompanied him to the store more than once to return pieces that were disappointing once he got them home.

@cejaanderson Been there; done that! So warped the pieces were unusable!

Interesting grains.

Fascinating. I love bringing the grain out in wood and the two different cuts show how it alters the look so well. They'd be great sanded and oiled to make abstract ornaments xx
