Unknown tool

I have encountered this item several times over the years. It's been in a box with some tool-type things from my late father-in-law and this time I was more determined to — well, determine — what it is.

I polled three brothers-in-law and only one had a suggestion. Pretty sure he's right, even though it doesn't help me: it's a cutting guide for a jigsaw or sabre saw! (It doesn't help me because it doesn't fit *my* sabre saw.)
