I think this is a type of Hover fly called a Sun Fly, thanks to information which Mair @mejbronant gave me about a photo I uploaded on July 4th http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/mag/artmay07/cd-hoverflies.html. I do hope he's not expecting to have a bath in those water droplets!
