Crescent Moon by rjb71

Crescent Moon

Tonight's moon 20% waxing it looked very spectacular in the sky next to venus. This is a heavy cropped image to bring out the detail a bit. I have posted a second shot including Venus in my other album.
Spectacular

Amazing. I've been sat looking at it through my living room window but didn't think to get the camera out!!

Superb shot - I had a go at a few moon shots myself this evening but I wasn't happy with any of them!

@lynneoversby I'd been out taking sunset photos but couldn't resist taking the moon as well :)

@wag864 Hi Kas I use a 70-300 nikkor VR lens. The secret is not to over expose it plus I use a tripod with cable release so there is no camera movement. That said it's still a heavy crop and quite a few shots end up in the bin!

@m2016 Thanks Mel for what it's worth this was the best of 20 or so shots it can be very hit or miss. The good thing is you can always try again another night!

Great shot. As you may know, I take a few photos of the moon. Not easy to do. I just lived the earthshine off the moon last night and Venus was very bright. Question - when you placed you camera on a tripod did you turn off the stabilization on the lens. It is called IS on a Canon, I believe it is called VR on a Nikon. If this is on, and the camera is on a tripod, you will get camera shake since the camera is anticipation movement.

@cirasj I generally do these days and certainly did tonight. My previous tripod was not very stable so I used to find I actually got sharper shots with it on. I now have a manfrotto tripod which is generally a lot more stable so I switched it off when I remember. Could just do with a longer lens what focal length do you use?

@rjb71 I started with a 300mm lens. A few years ago my wife purchased an inexpensive 650-1300mm lens and I shoot between 1100-1150mm.
