We went for a really nice walk late this afternoon around Rudyard Lake (from where Kipling takes his name). There's a nature reserve at the far end of the lake and we spotted this great crested grebe nesting there. There was a nesting coot too, just out of sight in this photo. Wow what a great shot!!! I haven't seen a grebe in a long time and never up close like this!

Thanks! I got lucky with the light at this moment before another batch of gloomy cloud rolled over. Last spring Dave was living in Wolves and we watched some grebe families at Himley Hall - we saw them nesting and then went back to see the chicks. I see quite a lot of grebes on local reservoirs, but it is often hard to get close.

I've never seen a grebe. It looks like a large bird. Lucky shot to have captured it on the nest!
