It's my birthday - I was given a new bat detector which will feature another day I'm sure. I spent the day in the Goyt Valley, in the Derbyshire Peak District attending the second Hen Harrier Day.
A collective of birders, wildlife lovers, conservationists etc grouping together to support our Hen Harriers and bring an end to the persecution of all of our raptors, listening to speakers including Charlie Moores (of Birders Against Wildlife Crime), Jo Smith (Derbyshire Wildlife Trust chief), Jeff Knott (RSPB), Mark Avery and the legendary Chris Packham.
Another brilliant day, the movement is growing. We will win and we'll save our hen harriers!
Please do spare a few minutes (ok 15 minutes) to watch Chris Packham's speech today
What Hen Harrier Day is all about - spoken by a true conservation hero, a brilliant mind - passionate and inspiring and full of common sense. It amazes me every time I see CP speak how he can talk so well, so eloquently - and get his points across so well - without any notes - just able to stand up and speak!
Happy birthday. I'll bet there's not many people can say they got a bat detector for their birthday! I wish i'd known about this event, i would have attended. good work Louise.
@gamelee I wish I'd shared it here now! Did consider it but didn't think there would interest. If you're on any social media or visit http://henharrierday.org/ you can find out more. This was the second HHD and there will be more - they will keep happening until we win the fight against illegal raptor persection. Look out for it next year, on the Sunday before the grouse shooting season opens, it'll be the 10th Aug I think.
@gamelee If you are interested in birds etc you might like BAWC - they're quite new so you may not have come across them yet, but co-organise Hen Harrier Day and are a volunteer group with the aim of tackling wildlife crime http://birdersagainst.org/bawc/
