Cowbird Egg by rob257

Cowbird Egg

For those of you following the phoebe/cowbird saga, here's the latest.
I removed the cowbird egg this a.m. Strangely, in addition to the c.b. egg, there were only 3 of the white phoebe eggs still in the nest. No sign of the 4th egg anywhere around the nest. At any rate I'm hoping for 3 healthy phoebe chicks. I was assured that I'd be lucky if even one survived if the cowbird was allowed to stay. I plan to open the egg this afternoon. Hesitant because I'm not sure what I'll find. Hoping it's just yolk and white and not a recognizable embryo.
Such pretty design on the egg....shame it hatches to a parasitic bird!

Bummer one of the phoebe eggs is missing. Crows and Blue Jays are major nest robbers! Glad you removed the Cowbird egg. I have a pair of Woodpeckers in my backyard and I'm so excited they moved it. However the Blue Jay and crows have been hanging around their nest. I shoo them away when I see them. Good luck with the rest of the Phoebes how the rest make it!

I'm so glad you got that egg out. What a shame one of the good eggs is gone, looks like this nest is being watched by many! I'm crossing my fingers you get 3 healthy phoebes!

I appreciate all the interest. I should have mentioned, for general information, that the eggs (both phoebe and c.b.) are about the size of a small marble.

@koalagardens Talk about mixed emotions. The egg is out. I had to see exactly what was inside. Turned out to be a recognizable, though no where near hatching, embryo. Have to focus on the fate of the remaining phoebe eggs!

I'm enjoying following this saga Rob! They are tiny eggs by the sound of it and pleased you removed the "bad" one! Hope the others survive although it sounds lie more that you are watching the nest. You'll have to post a shot of the phoebe bird as I've not seen one :)

Wonderful capture and I can hardly stand to wait to find out what is inside! I hope it's not something bad!

It's a good thing you took it out. They're mean little guys.

Watch for upcoming shots of momma on the nest and the inside of the cowbird egg. Hope to get a "full body" shot of the adults soon. Pretty little birds. Very sociable. The nest is only a couple of feet from our main entrance.
