Black Widow by robv

Black Widow

Need I say more? They don't bother me much so I leave a few around the yard for moments like this. Spooky to some, beautiful to others.
OMG!!!!! KILL IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you used a SUPER zoom for this.

@stclare No, had my Nikon PS about 3cm away from her belly. She didn't care as long as I didn't disturb her web or stir the air near her.

Awesome, haven't seen one since we left Ca 4 years ago. Cool and creepy! Nicely captured!!
October 26th, 2010
She's beautiful
October 26th, 2010
Great capture.Perfect for the theme.
October 26th, 2010
OMG! That gives me the creeps just looking at it. Very brave to get that close. Excellent theme shot!
October 26th, 2010
Excellent capture.

This is super cool. I've never had a close look at a Black Widow, and I didn't know their spinnerets were so visible. The rest of the detail is captivating. Well done!
October 26th, 2010
Beautiful but I do find these a little creepy.
October 26th, 2010
Very nice pic!!!! I only kill them when I find them in my garage. I'm afraid to relocate this particular one. I wouldn't venture 3cm from one no matter where I found it.( but should I ever change my mind, I won't disturb the web or stir the air-this probably won't happen) Thanks for posting this one!!!

I think they are just beautiful and your shot is great.
October 26th, 2010
This looks so pretty......amazing capture...
October 26th, 2010
YIKES --- it sure looks like a HUGE one. It scares me when I see them -- which I occasionally do find one here or there in the yard.
October 26th, 2010
Wow. Made my palms sweat.
October 26th, 2010
Beautiful shot of her...we have lots of them on our property :-) ...too scared to shoot one with my little P&S!
October 26th, 2010
Nice capture! I agree with @hinhoutbay, I wouldn't get that close to one with my P&S. Honestly, if I were that close, I would have to destroy the thing! :)
October 26th, 2010
fab shot and she is very red as well lol never seen a real one and hope not to as well
October 26th, 2010
Lovely shot; certainly looks scary with that red back. I believe she's related to our Redback Spider and they are both pretty venomous. We have to be careful when lifting anything with a rim on it in the yard.
October 26th, 2010
yep, definately spooked here!!!
October 26th, 2010
Beautiful capture! I think you found one insect I wouldn't venture that close to photograph.
October 26th, 2010
Fantastic! Hear so much about these but of course here in UK never seen one! Great close up, such detail, bad press!! Thanks for your kind comments on my pictures.
October 26th, 2010
Why not tell us a bit more about you in your profile? Where you are, why you're doing the project....I'm just a bit of a nosey whatsit!! :-)
October 26th, 2010

October 26th, 2010
Beautiful!
October 26th, 2010
Oh nice!! I say "beautiful"--she is really gorgeous!! And looks about ready to drop some eggs...(?)
October 26th, 2010
Cool!!!!
October 26th, 2010
@clarissajohal She does look rather plump, she could very well be readying herself for laying eggs. Just need some warm weather after the rather chilly and wet week we've had in SoCal.
October 26th, 2010
Beautiful yes but very creepy, give me the shivers!!
October 26th, 2010
UHMMMMMMMMMMMM thts freakin scary!!!!!! :O how close did u get?!?!?!?!
October 26th, 2010
Oh my gosh, my heart practically stops when I look at this! Now that's spooky! Ewww! :)
October 26th, 2010
Lovely crisp photo! I don't mind spiders as long as I don't step on one accidently! This is a beautiful capture of an interesting specimen.
October 26th, 2010
Excellent photograph!! Good job !!
October 26th, 2010
Ha--she won't be a widow for long...she's on the Popular Page. Now all the little boy spiders are going to be asking her out on a date....we won't tell them of their fate though
October 26th, 2010
red back for a reason excellent capture
October 26th, 2010
Creepy little thing! :-)
Great shot!
October 26th, 2010
Beautiful!!
October 26th, 2010
This is a very creepy shot. I would never venture this close to one and would definitely kill it knowing how dangerous they are. But I have a big fear of spiders so I would probably just stay away from it to begin with. I commend you for getting a nice shot of it though.

Always 4 or 5 of these guys in the sprinkler shutoff at our old townhouse in Mt View, CA. Grew up with them in TX, so I let them be. They always seemed so docile, but I guess I never really disturbed them. That's a really nice one.

Here in Missouri (some call it Misery) we're in the middle of Brown Recluse territory. Every single lake house we've rented has been full of them. They really creep me out. And the are seriously fast runners. My sis-in-law was likely bitten by one. Her condo was infested as is her brother's house on my block. Not sure how we've escaped them, but maybe it's because I let scores of cellar spiders live in peace in my basement, hoping they'll keep the bad boys out.
October 27th, 2010
definitely spooky! to me, anyway. however, her shapes are so interesting.
October 27th, 2010
Have to come back and Fave this--you did such a great photo of her.
October 27th, 2010
My neighbor brought one over last weekend to ask if it was what she thought it was. It was attractive, but I was glad it was already dead when she found it laying on a dead leaf in her driveway.
October 27th, 2010
Great shot,Im not scared of them until they come near me,Thanks for your kind words on my tribute to Edd,You will know how hard it is having had chameleons yourself,I dont think i will ever find one with his personality again x
October 28th, 2010
Wow! You have Black Widows, that's so awesome. Their venom can be deadly, but I would like to have one as a pet too.
Great shot!
October 28th, 2010
Superb!
October 29th, 2010
I would leave it alone and mind my own business, but if it's making babies. I would relocated it. Haha. This is pretty cool picture. I love it!
