Green Bottle Fly by robv

Green Bottle Fly

It's green and it's a fly, where the bottle comes in........? The scientific name is Lucilia sericata, for inquiring minds that want to know. This is one of the species of blow flies used in maggot therapy to debride wounds that are difficult to heal. The freshly hatched larvae are applied to ulcerous wounds and covered with gauze, after a few days the dressings are removed and fresh larvae applied until all dead and infected tissue is removed and healing has started. If you aren't squeamish see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maggot_therapy
Great capture. It always amazes how beautiful these insects are up close.

@bribuccigrossi Yes it is Brian, it's a great lens. I'm still messing with flash lighting and hope to start posting some shots approaching those of a couple of the 365 macro masters! :) I'm looking at the 100-400mm and 400mm L series Canon lenses used and new, thanks for the info you provided!

Very cool shot! Having seen some pretty nasty wounds, I'd give the larvae a try. I like all the green here!

Eh, once you've done surgery, that's nothing. I'll have to post some cool photos of veterinary bone surgery--haha.

No thanks, Clarissa! Robert, this is a great shot of a useful little critter. Didn't feel squeamish about the web link. They looked like they'd done a great job on that wound.
