For this day I took a photo through the eyepiece of my microscope of this little leaf-mining beetle. This is in the genus Leiopleura in the family Buprestidae. The heart shaped red markings seemed to fit the day, Happy Valentine's Day to all. Maybe 2mm long, the larva develops between the upper and lower surfaces of its host leaf.
Oh, awesome! One of the best Valentine's I've seen! I remember one Valentine's day my husband got me Madagascar hissing cockroaches, Romeo and Juliet. Yeah, you can guess how that ended up....thank goodness for Entomology departments and their million babies fostering programs, lol
