The circus came to Rutherglen! by robz

The circus came to Rutherglen!

The train came through in the early 1900's - the elephants followed closely after - this old photo in the local pub caught the event. P.S. In Australia a circus is no longer allowed to have elephants or big cats!
How interesting, great to see. We have a copy of an old photo of circus elephants in Penzance (turn of the century) - amazing to see. I'll have to dig it out and take a photo.

A fascinating image -- vintage comes through so strongly.

Interesting story- I know circuses here are highly regulated now- more for the animals than for the people!

Fab old photo even though the first thing I thought of was 'those poor elephants'. So good the big animals are banned now.

@photobird It's a sign of old age - but I can remember going to a circus with elephants. I'm rather pleased their not allowed any more - thy never seemed to have enough room. These vintage photos are great reminders. It would be interesting to see if your photo also had them pulling carriages. :)

@taffy Thanks Taffy - this pub owner had a fascinating collection - individual photos of each of the 66 pubs(shanties) in Rutherglen during the gold rush. (It now has 4!)

@olivetreeann Hi Ann - over here I think it was a case of having to regulate all circuses because of poor treatment by a few of them. Cirque de Soleil seems to have taken over now - they are fantastic!!

@golftragic Hi Marnie -I think it had to happen - the animals always looked miserable. Cheers
