Whale at play by robz

Whale at play

Eden used to be a place of dread for Southern Right whales and Humpbacks. A pack of Orcas would force them into Twofold Bay and into the waiting harpoons of the whalers. The reward for the Orcas was a feast of whale tongue and carcasses. Today the whales come into play - we watched this mother and calf at the mouth of the bay for 10 minutes. She was very boring. Then the whale watching boat appeared - she brought her calf over to the boat and put on a 20 minute show, apparently for her own entertainment as much as for the tourists on the boat! Amazing.
I am so envious of your experience - this is also on my bucket list!

@fbailey Hi FB - Thanks for your comment - I'm sure you would love these - they are really good to watch - even at this distance. In many places you can actually get a lot closer to them and hear them talking to each other. I'm totally amazed each time we see them. Cheers for now.

@peadar Thanks Peter - this is another time when I would have happily traded my small camera ( fits in my pocket) for something better. Cheers Rob

@jgpittenger Hi Jane - thanks for your comment. I would love to see the photos you would take. We were a fair way from these ones and my camera struggled. In some places ( eg across the Nullabor) you can get much closer and actually hear them talk to each other. :)

@dkbarnett It was really interesting to watch her for so long - she just hung around doing nothing - obviously waiting for the tourists!! Then this show - right beside the boat! :)
