Interesting times - new computer for travelling, new programs, new operating system and new editing program! Surprisingly enough these two photos were downloaded, tidied up with the inbuilt program and sort of edited with the trial run at Photoshop elements. Not really much idea of what to do properly yet - so I'm sorry that I haven't had a chance/time to reply to many of your helpful comments or check your projects. Hopefully tomorrow! Cheers Rob
@fbailey Hi FB -I didn't have much idea of the differences so I just went with the 13.It is sooo different to my old "Digital Editions" program - but I like how it has so many tutorials. I think it will be fine - and funnily enough the built in edit on windows 10 lets you do quite a few good things too - so I'll probably use a combination of them - depending on how much time I have. We're going to be moving around pretty quickly. Thanks for your suggestions one this!! Much appreciated. Cheers Rob
@robz I found the book Photoshop Elements 11 (in my case) super useful and very cheap too. Enjoy! Gavin Hoey has stacks of YouTube tutorials on Elements as well.
@fbailey Excellent!! Thanks for that tip - I'll try to watch some of the basic ones in the next few days. I saw one on layers - it looked pretty cool - much easier than I've had to do before. Should be good!! Cheers !
Elements is a pretty cool proggy... i dont have it myself, still working with an old version of Jasc paint shop pro :( I bet if i could lay my hands on elements i never stop editing :)
@madeinnl Hi Ko - it is pretty good - from what I've been able to figure out so far. ( LOL) I've only got the 30day free trial of the Elements 13 at the moment. I don't know if they actually selll you that one or sell you the better Elements 2018. Good fun. :)
@granagringa Hi Granagringa - I wanted a really lightweight one to travel with. Didn't go with the Microsoft version - apparently they go in for repair all the time. Ended up with a Lenova Think Pad 280 - it only weighs one and a bit kilograms and has all the bells and whistles. It would probably be too expensive for a computer at home but I would recommend a Lenova of some sort. The repair man was very positive about them - he rarely sees them! I used one for 4 years at my last school - it was so good. Hope this is useful. Cheers Rob
I love my laptop for its "travelbility"! I know most people use photoshopbut I just can't see myself paying for it month after month. I'm happy with the program (a one-time purchase) I have and it does a lot of the same things as PS.
@olivetreeann Hmmm - that's interesting Ann - I didn't realize it was an ongoing cost. On the Adobe site it appeared to be a once off purchase - with the ability to buy an update each year if you wanted to. I better check again - I'm like you in that I don't like the recurring expenses! Thanks for the info. :)
I'm pretty sure you don't need to pay a subscription for PS Elements Rob, I just had a look and it's not listed in the bunch covered by Creative Cloud. Not positive, but pretty sure. If you find otherwise, have a look at Luminar, it's a one-off payment with free upgrades and does most of the same stuff as PS. Once they bring in their DAM (Digital Asset Management) later this year I'm dumping Adobe with their subscriptions and general indifference to their clientele.
@golftragic Hi Marnie - thanks for having a look for me. I was pretty sure it was a once off - about $140 I think. That's fine by me - if I find a like it. I can't put my old program on the new computer - it has no CD slot - no SDHC slot either - which is a bit annoying!! Everything seems to be aimed at making you use the Cloud!! I don't like the thought of everything in some nebulous situation that I have no control over - pretty old fashioned I guess. If I don't come to grips with the Elements I'll have a look at the other. Thanks for your info!! Cheers Rob
@jgpittenger Hi Jane - I don't have the creative cloud app. I prefer to keep everything on my laptop and just pay a one-off fee. I was quite happy with the very old "Digital Editions" but I can't get it onto the new laptop - no CD slot. Forced into new technology! LOL! Cheers Rob
@robz That could be the Cloud version- I just remember many members of the photo club saying the same thing, that at $10 US dollars per month it wasn't worth it. Even if it's a one-time cost (which I haven't checked I confess), my program was much less and as I said, it's got all the features. There are so many effects I'll never use them all! It's called Smart Photo Editor if you want to compare it to PS.
@olivetreeann Thanks so much Ann - It is all a bit confusing really - it seems the only way to know if it suits is to trial it. And even then it's tricky because you don't really know what you're doing with it. Bit of a Catch 22 situation. I still have my other computer with my old program on it so that will be fine for times when we are at home. I definitely won't be using the Cloud form (don't like the thought of all my info being a bit public) and thank you for another name to check before committing to the Elements. Cheers Rob
