Once upon a time in Oz there lived an entrepreneur called Christopher Skase. He envisioned a resort for the rich and powerful - right on the beach and lavish enough to keep the pesky locals away. So he built it (or his company did) , and his wife, Pixie, furnished it with an amazing array of medieval furniture and artefacts - which seemed to strangely complement their luxurious surroundings. All was as it should be - until nasty rumours started to abound and Christopher and Pixie fled our shores - him to never return. And the locals found they quite liked the Sheraton Mirage - it had good views, not bad tucker and nice cold beers and cocktails - and infinite vistas of cool, blue waters......
Love the pic, and absolutely love the story. I well remember the 'white shoe' era and the cowboys of the time. Pixie went to the same secondary school I did, only a year or two ahead of me. She had a most unsavoury reputation even then though, in fairness, that was the 'orribly conservative 1950s. Her exploits were infamous throughout the school and well beyond.
It looks so blue and sunny! Curious story- not sure what the rumors were about but whatever they were it seems there might have been some truth to them since Pixie and Christopher disappeared. Good shot.
@golftragic Hi Marnie - fancy you going to school with Pixie - such a small world. I was always amused by her name - in those days it just seemed to be pretty outrageous. The whole saga was such big news for such a long time - but, you know, that crazy idea of his (and however many dubious deals were done to get it approved) have really resulted in a resort with lasting magic. Great spot for a beer - if you're feeling a bit expansive! Cheers Rob
@jacqbb Hi Jacqueline - I'm glad you liked the story - it was quite a saga at the time. The concept of a symmetric landscape is a bit tricky - I did like your idea of an edited one - we were encouraged to be creative weren't we? I hope you wouldn't mind if I took your lead and tried a created form as well? :)
@olivetreeann Hi Ann - it is in a beautiful spot and it is quite a magical design - even now many years later. He was a crook through and through - so it's a bit funny that he left this as a legacy! Cheers Rob
@jgpittenger Thanks Jane - the story was one long saga - very typical of the Gold Coast in those days - dodgy deals and crooked businessmen - and he was one of the worst - but he did leave us with a great place for a poshy beer and cocktail. The concept of a symmetric landscape was a bit tricky - so I was pleased to read that you felt it met the symmetry theme. Thanks for the feedback Cheers Rob
@robz And yes, I'm always amazed at how small the world is, especially in a city the size of Geelong. someone is always related to, best friends, went to school with etc, etc.
Thanks for entering the landscape challenge!
