From a past age..

From the time when men smoked cigarettes, cigars and pipes. The timber pipe shown here was used by my Dad for roughly 30 years of his life, from his University days onwards. This was for my get-pushed challenge to "produce a still life with a masculine theme"
@kali66 Hi Kali - I really enjoyed your challenge once I got going on it. It gave me a chance to reflect on the ways in which the lives of men have changed over the last 30-40 years. Producing a "still life with a masculine theme" was actually quite eye opening. Cheers Rob

Ah, yes, different times...

Interesting photo for the challenge. You never see anyone smoking a pipe these days do you.

That is an interesting challenge and an interesting photo. It definitely looks like a masculine theme. Very nice lighting.

Interesting challenge and great photo!

Nice photo. I smoked a pipe when I did my national service. I was up in northern Norway. In winter there could be minus 30-40 degrees. No way you could take off your gloves and roll a cigarette, much easier stuffing a pipe with tobacco and light up! BTW I quit smoking 11 years ago :-)

Great colors, tones, shapes. What would you think re cropping of the distracting object right?

very good rob, they are very photogenic items. I like the warm tones, but wonder if you played with a dark background and different light sources you might get some more mileage out of the challenge, in any case you definitely met the challenge with this shot.

@kali66 Thanks for the feedback Kali - I basically never do still life images unless needs be - so it never occurs to me to set up special lighting or backgrounds. If I have time tomorrow (depends on the weather) I'll have another go..... Cheers Rob

@kali66 Hi Kali - I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to do it again (fine weather so we'll be fencing) but I had a quick play with editing it and I think it's a bit better. :)

@shutterbug49 Hi Shutterbug - thanks so much for your comments - they are always so thoughtful.I really appreciate the feedback even though I often don't get a chance to thank you - I tend to use the time to look at everybody else's photos. Cheers Rob

@helstor Hi Helge - I shuddered when I read your comment - minus 30-40 sounds crazy. I used to like my Dad's pipe - the smell was quite nice - better than cigarette smoke somehow. Like you he eventually quit too. Congratulations on not smoking for 11 years - it must have been hard at the start! :)

@jgpittenger Hi Jane - thanks for your suggestion - that item was an old cigarette box - but you were right and it was just a nuisance in the image. I think this is better. Thanks again. Cheers Rob

oh yes, much, lovely to isolate the items and really show off their patina, well done.
