Aussie native plant #3

The Grass Tree produces this wonderful flower spike which can be up to 4m long.
The Grass Trees have traditionally been harvested by indigenous people for a variety of uses, including the provision of food, drink, and materials utilised in the manufacture of tools and weapons.
As a food source, they provide edible roots and the flower stem is laden with nectar, which can be soaked in water to produce a sweet drink.
The flower stem is also used in conjunction with a hardwood drill for making fire, and may be used to produce a lightweight composite spear.
An individual plants can live for up to 300 years.
They are an iconic Aussie plant and will be easily recognised by most Aussies.

@koalagardens Hi Katerina - they seem a bit tricky to photo - I really wanted to show the plant as well but it made a very ordinary photo. :)
