This little dinghy has the structure of a "piners boat" - ie the type of boat used by the early loggers who cut the Huon Pine in the Gordon River and then floated the trunks down to the mills in Strahan. They were made from Huon Pine - which never rots!
@jgpittenger Hi Jane - no, actually the trees they harvested were very large - they chopped them down and rolled them into the river and then used the river to transport them out of the rainforest. They often lost a lot if the weather was rough -these still line the rivers. Huon Pine is protected now - no-one can harvest them. But the old logs never rot and 2 companies have permits to collect the old logs from the banks of the rivers. Some of them have been found to be thousands of years old - they grow very slowly! The timber is amazing with the tiniest little growth rings to count. Cheers Rob
