That is an interesting detail. It looks like a kind of honeycomb structure. Maybe for mechanical resistance of for sap circulation ?

@etienne Hi Etienne - I'm afraid I don't know much about the structure and functioning of these - but they are huge so it must be something to do with their flotation mechanism. They are truly amazing to see! :)
