I understand that Photoshop used to be able to create this effect, but does not support the plug-in anymore. I used an iPhone app called "hyper droste," available from the iTunes Store for about $2. I am somewhat embarrassed to say that this entire effect was created with my iPhone camera, no special knowledge required. It sure is fun, though! :)
