This date symbolizes how far into this year (2019) women must work to earn what men earned in last year (2018) - at least, in the USA.
The causes and effects are quite complex and vary widely by race, socio-economic status and gender, but I thought I'd at least note the date. I believe that is the point of the day - to learn and discuss.

Well, there is one good thing about the military - the pay is equal. It's based on time in rank and nothing else. Department of the Army civilians have a similar pay scale. Also, in my husband's building the number of female generals is a higher percentage than females in the military (12 percent), so they do a good job of promoting women.
Great way to illustrate social commentary. The wage/gender gap is as appalling as any form of discrimination. So much needs to be changed in our world.
Powerful image that conveys the problem we've faced and that it's not really changing. Though reading above comments, maybe there is some hope in some professions. Certainly in academia, I've seen some gains but not equality.
Wow, that one made me sit back and think Rosie. It's a very clever, well thought-out image and makes the point well. Same kind of thing in Oz, of course in many jobs and professions. Having just read the comment by @taffy I must say that at least academia here has gender equality.
Nice et funny way to illustrate this unfair inequality!
