At last I managed to get some shots of the kingfisher. It was wonderful to not only see him, but to get some photos of this lovely little bird. This is the male and he's gone back to his usual perch I am pleased to say. I have ordered a lens collar for my 300mm prime lens as I wanted to put the extender on it but of course, even though it's a lighter lens than my 80-400 it was too heavy to put on the tripod. As a result I dug out my 70-200mm 2.8 lens and used x2 extender. It's a lovely lens and I should use it more often but it is very heavy but works fine on the tripod.
I went back down to the brook this afternoon with my 80-400 and x2 extender but do you think Bluey would cooperate! He was on this stick when I arrived but flew off as I set up. He then flew round a couple of times checking me out and then he decided to sit on some foliage near the stick and looked at me from there. Of course, my camera was focused on the stick so I didn't get any shots and after an hour in the cold, I decided to call it a day. As a wildlife photographer, you do need a lot of patience and make some sacrifices such as sitting in the cold instead of staying home in the warm. Oh well, another day perhaps!
Thanks for all your kind comments and Favs - it is always much appreciated.
Beautiful capture of this awesome bird. There was one flitting around when we went to photograph the owls but like your friend they never cooperated by staying still long enough for me to get one shot.
