The White one is an escaped domestic duck, which were bred from Mallards many years ago. They are generally a bit bigger and heavier than truly wild ducks. The white one and Mallards will happily interbreed and produce all sorts of strange colour variations. I think but not 100% sure that both male and female domestic ducks are white. Maybe there is a Duck keeper out there somewhere.
Female Mallards are much plainer than the male, but still very attractively plumaged seen close up. Mostly speckled browns, but do have a bright violet / blue wing stripe.
Most female ducks are plainer than the brightly coloured males, this is so the female can hide while brooding the eggs and looking after the young ducklings.
Oh and a very nice shot as well, Rosie.
