Apart from one or two historical holidays, I usually don't care much about them - except for the fact that I don't (usually) work - because nowadays everything is politicized.
Today is one of such holidays, but this year is a little different: it's the 100th anniversary of the Republic.
Governed as a monarchy for more than 750 years, the start of the republic took place in a bloody and unstable period in Portugal, as the king and prince had been assassinated 2 years before due to the severe economic, social and political conditions.
Except for a hand full of nations, the World is currently also in a severe economic and social crisis. Portugal has been in the international news for the worst reasons and uncertainty rules as whether we will reduce our national debt.
As such, today's picture is about the grey times we are going through and the grey country that I'm living in. One is the reflection of the other, and I'm afraid we lack the proper leaders to get us out of this. More than just a holiday, today should be a day for reflection and thought about what History might teach us...
I agree with you that most 'public' holidays these days are either politicized, or commercialized like here in the US. It's all about greed & or money these days. The public has been fooled into spending what many really cannot afford on the hype & decorations etc that go with each different holiday.
But back to your picture Rui ;D
Nicely done on the greys & it really does reflect your thoughts about Portugal. I enjoyed reading a little about the history of your country.
This tough economic situation that so many countries find themselves in, all comes back to greed again, maybe we should depose the bankers & greedy business men who have caused it all - we could send them off to colonize the moon maybe ;).
Thank you about your comment, Ellen (@dollybeads) it was a pleasure to read. I completely agree with everything, except for one thing: the moon is too close... :-)
