The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist

The fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square was originally intended to display an equestrian statue of William IV, but the idea was abandoned because it was too expensive. After more than 150 years, the plinth finally came into use, and has been displaying a changing roster of commissioned artworks since 2003.

This work is by Michael Rakowitz. He created a replica of the deity (a winged bull) that stood at the Nergal Gate of Nineveh from 700 BC to 2015, until it was destroyed by Islamic State. It was made by riveting 10,500 empty Iraqi date-syrup cans together, to draw attention to the destruction of Iraq’s date palms: the date industry had been its second biggest export after oil.
