Incarceration to Independence

The 18th century Citadel of Rashaya, built by the Shehab family was the place where several important Lebanese figures were imprisoned on November 11 1945 by Free French troops while Lebanon was still subject to the French Mandate. National and International pressure led to their release on November 22 1945, and this is now commemorated as the Lebanese Day of Independence.
The prisoners included Bechara El Khoury, later the first post-independence President of Lebanon and Riad El-Solh, later the Prime Minister.
