Vanishing Point by rvwalker

Vanishing Point

The original photo was quite dark and very gray because of heavy overcast and fog. There was no trace of sunlight in the sky. Imagine my surprise when I tried a preset in Silver Efex Pro 2 that popped that light circle out of the clouds.

I held this image until today for black and white Wednesday, so it was taken outside the time period required for the technique 18 black and white challenge.

Really excellent photo.
January 8th, 2014
Fantastic capture. It reminds me of the designs I was supposed to do in school to show perspective and vanishing point.
January 8th, 2014
I am definitely feeling this one, mono (of course) but the symmetry works very well.
January 8th, 2014
Loving the leading lines, very nice :)

Beautiful. Faved!
January 8th, 2014
Beautifully done. I wonder what it would be like without the sun

H
Says, The Great Train Robbery to me. Love it.
January 8th, 2014
Really a beauty. Really like the tracks and the power lines (that usually drive you nuts when trying for a shot!) taking you into the distance. The sun and the grey together are an interesting point.
January 8th, 2014
Very impressive. The more I look at it the more it draws me in.
January 8th, 2014

@moxy Thanks for the fav, Shelley. I think the fog helps emphasize the lines.

@peterdegraaff I liked the original image quite a bit, and the sun was totally invisible. But, it was pretty dark, gray, and flat. When I lightened it and added contrast, the image seemed to come to life, and the big empty spot appeared. I think there is too much blank area to try to fill in the sky, and I liked the effect as it is, and it really does pop more than the original gray photo. Thanks for your comment, Peter.

@jgpittenger Thanks again for the fav, Jane. I have a lot to learn on all the Nik software, but so far I like it a lot. I need to be careful not to compromise my style and get caught up in all the special effects too much.

wow this is fantastic. Well done you.

@taffy Thanks for the fav, Taffy. I have a lot to learn from all the Efex software, but so far I like them a lot. My challenge will be to avoid getting caught up in their presets, so that they compromise my "style". For example, I love the way this turned out, but it is much different from what I usually try to do.
January 9th, 2014
@rvwalker I started with the presets, but now am using the right hand side a lot more. I start with the preset closest to what I want, then use sliders, then use control point. It's such a powerful program that there are a lot of other features I still don't know how to use!
January 9th, 2014
I really like this in B&W. It adds to the mood. Well done!
January 9th, 2014
Wow, well done!

Heading north to the frozen waste lands? Great lines and really suits b&w.

January 10th, 2014
@darsphotos Thanks for the fav, Darlene. Silver Efex Pro 2 is one of a suite of photo processing programs that can be purchased as a group. http://www.google.com/nikcollection/ This one is used for black and white, and there are lots of great features.
January 10th, 2014
@moreyoulessme @amyamoeba Thanks for your comments, Jerri and Amy. Jerri, if you do decide to buy the software, look for Nik coupons on the web. You can save 15%.
