Mountain Goat by rvwalker

Mountain Goat

Linda and I were very fortunate to find a few mountain goats in the Snake River Canyon in Wyoming today. These animals are completely wild because the canyon is not in a park of any kind. These goats are in their prime winter coats now and ready for the coldest weather. They graze on steep hillsides and climb steep rock cliffs as easily as we climb stairs.

Trending.

This one looks great!! Fav!! The only one I've seen in the wild was in Glacier, and it's fur was all matted from a storm that had passed through. This is stunning! What kind of lens do you have that is 500mm?

Beautiful capture and lovely shot! FAV!

@megmills Thanks for the fav, Meg. We are so lucky to be able to drive for an hour to get a chance to watch these wonderful animals.

@taffy Thanks for the fav, Taffy, but would you mind clicking the fav button? I have an ancient Sigma 170-500 zoom that isn't as sharp as I would like, but I am still glad to have it. We haven't had many storms this winter and all the animals look great.

@kbird61 Thank you for the fav, Kay. They were incredible to watch on the cliffs.

@mccarth1 Thanks, Kerry. These are one of my favorite animals, and most of the year there is no chance we will see them.

Fantastic shot Ross. Nice to get out there and explore such beautiful country. fav for me

@rvwalker Clicked -- thought I had, of course, but not the first time I didn't click hard enough! I'm impressed with the quality of the shot -- I've thought of renting one for fun but there's not enough wildlife around here to make it worth it.

Lovely capture ...

I love that thick luscious coat. Looks as if you and Linda had a nice hike too

This is "wild", in more ways than one. The goats...... and the photo's composition. Gotta fav it Ross.. We have seen a lot of these animals in our trips throughout the western states. They absolutely fascinate me with their ability to maneuver those mountains.....

@libertylady Thanks for the fav, Alice. We hadn't even planned on going here today and decided to do it at the last minute. I'm glad we did.

@taffy Thanks for indulging me, Taffy. Renting might be a good idea on a vacation with a chance of seeing wildlife. Trying before you buy might tell you if you've chosen the right lens.

@aglennc Thanks for the fav, Anita. I've only seen these here, at Glacier, and Mount Rushmore, but have seen lots of bighorn sheep throughout the west. I watched from a distance as a goat climbed down a high cliff today. Unbelievable.

@pdulis Thanks for commenting, Peter. I appreciate it.

@jgpittenger Unfortunately, Linda's health won't allow hiking anymore, so we were very fortunate to see these from a road. Thanks for your comment, Jane.

@rvwalker Our nearby San Diego Zoo's Safari Park (20 minutes from us) has a whole bunch of these guys and the man made "mountains" for them to climb. They count them every day! Half the time we can't even see them on the "mountain". Can't imagine having to count them.

@soozieqt @moxy @skippysue @anazad511 @soboy5 @annbo Thanks, everyone. It is a rare treat to see these in the wild. Shelley, as you approach Alpine, look for them up high on the right in the last couple of miles of the canyon, especially if you see cars on the side of the road.

@lily LOL. I guess I am, Lily. Winter scenery gets all the credit. Viewers seem to be attracted to the photos that can be created here in snowy conditions.
